-be careful with humor..don't force humor..let it develop naturally, when you do use humor make sure it is AT&T(Appropriate, Timely, and Tasteful)
-avoid excessive complimenting
-do not be self-critical, show CONFIDENCE
Effective Global Communication Skills
1. Use simple, clear language!
No GRE/SAT words!
2. Be a good listener
Test understanding often through active listening.
"What I hear you saying is..." "Let me make sure I understand what you've said..."
3. Signal what you are about to do
For example when you have a question say, "May I ask a question?" "I have a
question about that." or when you are going to make a suggestion start by saying "If
I may make a suggestion..."
4. Give reasons for disagreeing first
"I disagree because that idea doesn't address the main issue and will be difficult to implement."
Reverse the order by giving your reasons for disagreeing first and then stating that you disagree.
"That idea doesn't address the main issue and will be difficult to implement, therefore I cannot agree."
5. Disagree with ideas not people
Not : "I disagree with you because..." Better : "I disagree with that because..."
Not : "I disagree with your idea because.." Better : "I disagree with that idea
because..."
6. Avoid "Knee-jerk" relations
Not : "That's ridiculous." "Are you crazy?" "No way!"
Respond with thoughtful consideration.
7. Questions?
Ask questions to clarify and when you don't understand
"Could you please explain that one more time?
"Could you speak a little slower please?"
"Could you explain the meaning of ...?
8. Have a positive attitude.
Create a sense of harmony and goodwill
9. Learn to observe Rather than Evaluate
-Observation(Stating what happened)
ex> He is not considerate
-Evaluation(Judging what happened)
ex> He's been late for our meeting three times this month
10. Use "We" instead of "I"
Try to avoid using the word "I" when making a suggestion.
Give the sense that you are working as a team with your counterpart by using "we"
Not- "I think we should discuss this issue later."
Rather- "What if we discuss this issue later?/Why don't we discuss this issue later?"
11. Summarize and test often
"Let me check where we are at this point." or
"So this is what we have agreed on so far."
This helps reduce misunderstandings and encourages clear communication.
12. Express feelings honestly in order to build trust.
"I'm beginning to feel some concern about whether we are going to reach an
agreement today."
"I feel we might need more time as there are still some significant differences between
us."
13. Mirroring
- match your counterpart's tone of voice, posture, gestures, etc.
