Gyeongbokgung palace

 

This is Gyeongbokgung palace of the Joseon Dynasty.

King Taejo Yi Seong-gye founded Joseon Dynasty in 1392(Joseon Dynasty was founded by King Taejo Yi Seong-gye) and moved out the capital to Hanyang in 1394.

Hanyang is now Seoul.

 

First of all, King Taejo built Gyeongbokgung palace, Sajikdan altar and Jongmyo shrine.

 

Today's tour begins here at Gwanghwamun Gate.

Gwanghwamun Gate is south gate and palace's official entrance.

 

There are three gates. Kings and queens used the middle gate that was called Eomun.

 

Civil officials used the left gate and military officials used the Seohyeomun(right gate).

 

 

Who wants to be a king?  If you want to be a king, walk this Eodo(middle path).

 

There are stone markers, each of them represents their position(level) when morning court sessions(kings' morning meeting).

 

What(where) is the iron ring(thin stone, Deumeu, Jeong, Dapdo, Ilwolobongdo)?

 

Jeong symbolizes the king's power.

 

Take a look at two funny-looking stone creatures, so called Cheollok or Seosu. 

two stone animals are watching the waterway to repel the evil spirits and to protect the palace buildings.

of course, Cheollok is mythic animal.

What are those things on the top of the roof lines?

we called it Japsang.

 

There are the four animal statues, the blue dragon, the white tiger, the red phoenix and black tortoise(turtle).

 

There are two golden dragons on the center of the ceiling of Geunjeongjeon.

 

There is royal throne (ilwolobongdo, Deumeu).

 

This is  Deumeu, water container, that was used to extinguish the fire.

King Sejong the great built Jiphyunjeon to study and finally created Hangeul with his scholars in 1443(1446).

 

Kings of Joseon Dynasty used to host the banquet(feast, party) for officials and foreign envoys in Gyeongheoru.
