옥류동

acoding to the 조선 records, There was 5 best beautiful attractions in서울 area, 옥류동 area was one of the spots, 옥류동 literally means clear stream village. a lot of people who was middle class in 조선 love and enjoy arts at around 옥류동.

a long time ago, there was no camera, what's the way to record for beautiful scenery and historical affairs? drawing picture was the best way to keep for landscapes.

there was stone bridge at 비해당 in 옥류동 which located former site of 안평대군 house, the name was 기린교 and around there was a beautiful spot. therefore, after building villa for study or poem, many middle class people had fun.

however, this area was changed from natural beautiful spot to APT complex. poor thing !! so the 기린교 was destroyed in 1960s due to apartment building. With the level of curiosity rising about history, the old APT was tearing down in 2007, the 기린교 was also found in 2007 while looking for cultural assets. thanks god ~~

Good afternoon ! my name is Jun, chang-geun, hi seoul greeter, volunteer tour guide. nice to meet u, welcome to white pine site . everybody came here? thank you.

As u know, korea has a long history of 5,000 years. and since the foundation of 조선 dynasty in 1392. seoul has been the capital city for almost 600 years.

can I ask something? thank u, let me give 2 kind of example, No 1 서울 became a capital city in ( ), No 2 Columbus discovered America in ( ). which one is first? u are right, Columbus discovered America about 100 years after 서울 capital. therefore, we can say long powerful history 서울 ! thank u

now, I will show today's schedule. this place we are here was called the white pine site, we will look around here for about 10 minute, after this, we are going to 사직 park, 옥류동, it'll take about 2 hours.

that's today's schedule. any question? thank u. from now on, I'm going to tell u about the white pine. look at the white pine first. what do u think about the dead white pine's shape? It looks like wearing a cast and being injured. poor thing ! Isn't it?

this 통의동 white pine was beautiful, 600 year-old tree and the tallest in korea, 16m in height, 5m in trunk diameter, and it was designated as a natural monument in 1961.

however, unfortunately, the tree fell down and died in 1990 due to heavy rain and typhoon, and its designation as a natural monument was lifted in 1993. it has been treated with preservatives and cut down, except for the bottom part, as you see.

Now, the 4 trees are taken care of by 종로구 district office, 서울 city hall, cultural heritage administration, and a person 홍기옥, after their seeds were gathered and planted in other areas.   종로구 named the trees as "the nurse trees" and they hold a memorial service for the trees every year.

now, I have a question. what is relationship both trees between dead tree and 4 young trees? you are right. dead tree is the father of 4 young trees. oh ~~

This place is called 명당, “ideal spot" because king 영조, the 21th king of the Joseon Dynasty, was born here and became a king. 영조”s mother was a lower class woman who worked doing chores for a court lady. she was in the king's favor, and she gave birth to 영조. thought 영조 hasn't priority to be the king, he ended up becoming king. 김정희, who is well-known for his good writing during the 조선 dynasty, also once lived here.

Why don't you take a deep breath, so that you can get some energy from this ideal spot. 마무리 before white pine died, Was this tree natural monument ?    you are right.  after dying the tree, it is not natural monument any more, it's been cancelled. let's move to next place. thank u, 감사합니다.

Sajikdan(사직단)

King 태조 of 조선, the founder of the 조선 Dynasty, established 종묘(royal Ancestral shrine) and 사직단(altar for state deities) east and west of 경복궁 place, respectively.

he also had sajikdan built in major provincial cities and rites held to pray for rich harvests.

Sajik refers to "state deities" or, more specifically, the gods of land(Sa) and grains(Jik), and the rulers of korean kingdoms believed that destiny of their state was dependent on the mercy of these two deities.

that is why the Joseon rulers regarded the commemoration rite for the state deities along with that for the defunct royal ancestors as the most import ant state affairs to ensure the safety and prosperity of their dynasty.

Today's rites involve offering slaughtered cattle, pigs and various grains to the gods, and consist of a series of ceremonies which involve offering silk(jeonpye) to the deities, welcoming them(yeongsinnye), three wine offering(초헌, 아헌, 종헌관), sharing offered foods between participants(eumbongnye), and the incineration of written prayers(mangnyo).
