Embattled Seoul Mayor Oh-Se-hoon stepped down last week. Taking full responsibility for his failed attempt with the free lunch program in a referendum, Oh submitted his resignation. The opposition-led free lunch program was nullified due to a low voter turnout and the mayor, who was serving in his second-term, made his decision since he promised to quit if he couldn’t stop the welfare populist policy.

 

During a nationally televised news conference, Oh said that he is assuming full responsibility for the referendum results.

 

“I will fulfill my responsibility by stepping down and minimize the upcoming political debates. I believe this is in accordance with the will of the people in the city,” said Oh. Furthermore Oh mentioned that the excessive welfare system is bound to create higher taxes and place a large burden on future generations. It has been confirmed that a mayoral by-election will be held on October 26 to elect Oh’s successor. Deputy Mayor Kwon Young-gyu has been appointed as acting mayor until the election.

 

By spearheading strict political donation bills and pushing the past authoritarian administrations, Oh, then-GNP lawmaker won the praise of many people.

 

Once considered a strong presidential candidate for the 2012 election race, the 50-year-old telegenic mayor has, for now, met his end.

With the empty seat causing various questions for the upcoming mayoral election, a strong public sentiment is being formed ahead of the parliamentary elections next April and the presidential vote in December 2012. In any case, if the ruling party gives up the seat to the opposition, this could be a serious blow to the GNP in the Seoul metropolitan area.

 

Oh is currently being criticized by GNP leader Hong Joon-pyo for his unilateral decision to leave office early by putting personal reputation ahead of the interests of the nation and the party. Hong expressed his displeasure with the party’s upcoming legislative activities becoming wary in the upcoming parliamentary sessions.
